Overview:
As we officially turn the page away from Sargassum Summer, we are excited to see many of our favorite beaches come back to life. The 2025 sargassum season was the worst the Caribbean has seen in its history, with Mats stretching miles and weighing thousands of tons blanketing our favorite Eastern fishing spots from May - October. Unlike last year, the Sargassum came in too thick and too often to create a consistent Big Tarpon bite, however, we were able to unlock new spots that were loaded with Fun-Sized Tarpon, big Snook, and the occasional Bonefish and even Permit! As of today (November 6th) 95% of Sargassum inundated beaches and bays are now Sargassum Free! This should help to increase our chances at finding Bonefish and make fishing much easier and less technical allowing clients of all skill levels a better chance!
Weather:
While we are still experiencing some days with extreme heat (90+), overall temperatures for both air and water have started to cool off, which is critical to Flats Fishing. When waters are too warm, we see a reduction in both baitfish and predators feeding in shallow water as they instead look for deeper water around cliffs, reefs, and deeper bays. This seasonal cooling effect will lead to more baitfish coming back to the Shallows after spending the Summer in deeper water. Additionally, we are now in our Wet Season, but don’t fear the showers here last only a few minutes and are often concentrated along the Mountains and Western shores. Snook especailly love the addition of freshwater, meaning we should have some awesome opportunities at Deltas where Mullet and Snook stack up after big rains. Winds remain steady with Easterlies being the most common. Winds of 10-20MPH are expected, with some days higher and some lower.
Baitfish:
We are seeing a mix of baitfish in our Bays right now. Late October into Early November is a secondary Spawning time for the main baitfish: Pilchards. While less significant than the main Spring Spawn, it is great to see another successful spawn occuring. Silversides & Mullet remain around as well in certain places and we are hoping that the Ghost Shrimp were able to survive the Sargassum blankets of Summer, which will entice our Bonefish back onto the beaches and Flats offering epic sight fishing opportunities!
